Cycle parking on Market Place, Thirsk

The disused railway bridge at Maunby is open to cyclists thanks to a welcoming farmer - the bridleway to the south is a surfaced farm road. Other nearby crossings of the Swale are busy main roads.

NCN route 65 passing under the East Coast Main Line for the third time

Junction of NCN route 65 (the Way of the Roses) and the loop through the National Trust's Beningbrough estate

Support van for a cycling group on the Way of the Roses blocking the off-road cycleway.... selfish.

Shared-use footway with segregated footway sign - wrong! And why does it not begin until this point?

There's an off-road cycleway ahead, but no dropped kerb to reach it without going onto the main road.

Possibly the narrowest alley in England? Even a folder has to be folded here.

Myton Bridge - this leads only to a byway and lane parallel to the Ure.

Cycling on the North Yorkshire Moors

New bridleway sign

After about 20 metres the bridleway swings left from the Cleveland Way footpath

The bridleway continues ahead - improved but unsignposted

Lots of parking for families and the disabled but none for cycles at Northallerton Sainsbury's,

Bridge over disused railway and no right-turn at dangerous junction.

Disused railway line

Start of bridleway parallel to old railway line

View along old railway line

Start of one-way road to avoid exiting onto main road at a dangerous junction - but an exemption for cyclists would be helpful.

Start of footpath - not shown on any online mapping.

Start of potentially useful cut-through

Lamp post in footpath

Footpath Only on potentially useful cut-through

Only a footpath, with no cycling potential, but still it could be so much better if landowners didn't feel the need to fence it off on both sides.

The Way of the Roses (route 688) meets the National Byway

It's not the end of the route, it's just the end of a short stretch of shared-use footway from Linton on Ouse Primary School - and does anyone seriously think that children should/will not cycle on for 20m to the side road? This is what hap ... [more]

Short stretch of shared-use footway from Linton on Ouse Primary School

It's not the end of the route and there's no need to dismount - it's just the end of a section of shared-use footway.

National Cycle Network route 65 leaving The Way of the Roses (route 688)

The northern gate to the National Trust's Beningbrough estate - one-way traffic southbound only

To go through the National Trust's Beningbrough estate, you have to cycle out against the flow of traffic from the north

Lots of cycle parking at Beningbrough (National Trust) - a popular ride from York, and largely off-road

Beningbrough House (National Trust) - an easy ride from York (largely offroad) and a short detour off National Cycle Network route 65

Road into the Beningbrough estate (National Trust)

National Cycle Network route 65 - start of offroad route all the way to York

National Cycle Network route 65 - finally on to the roads quite a way north of York

a great village to act as a base for mountain biking, and a better than average attitude to cycling in the school
